Crawford Steel Company grafitti wall

Brighton Park Community Graffiti

This spot nestled in the Brighton Park community, is by far the largest and arguably the most iconic graffiti spot in the city. It began as the building itself, and eventually down 36th place. These walls have hosted countless artists from Chicago and around the world for over three decades. The Crawford Steel walls have been home to Meeting of Styles and other events, making it a staple of the graffiti community.

History of Crawford Steel Walls

The Crawford Steel Company Graffiti Walls trace their origins back to the early 1990s, when local artists were granted permission and began using the exterior walls of the company’s sprawling industrial buildings as a canvas for creative expression and as a safe haven for local artists.

Situated in a historic Chicago neighborhood known for its industrial roots, the walls quickly became a hub for street art, blending the gritty legacy of steel manufacturing with vibrant urban culture. Over the years, the graffiti evolved from unauthorized tags to respected murals, drawing attention from art communities, photographers, and cultural historians alike.

Today, the Crawford Steel Graffiti Walls stand as a unique symbol of transformation—where the raw, utilitarian backdrop of steel meets the dynamic spirit of community-driven art.
